I look forward to the Living Social emails that come to my email mailbox every day. I have bought several of these group deals that have afforded some wonderful meals with my family at an unbeatable price.

The power of Living Social, Groupon, and Mint Daily Double Deals in driving new customers to stores is undeniable. Many of the customers who purchase these deals will bring friends or family with them and/or they will become repeat customers.

Currently, Groupon has over 60 million subscribers and Living Social (backed by Amazon) has about 20 million. According to the Wall Street Journal article To Beat Groupon, Its Competitors Must Go National, Living Social is hiring six new sales people per day to help local merchants structure effective deals and to guide them through the coupon creation process. And now, Google is entering the scene.

Why I Like Vertical Response

Vertical Response is an email campaign website where you can easily create and launch an email campaign. There are several really good email campaign sites out there like Constant Contact, iContact, etc… But most of them require a monthly subscription fee. The reason I like Vertical Response is because a small business who is just starting to build an email list, can use Vertical Response without a monthly fee. Instead, the business will pay per email sent which is incredibly cheap (at the time of writing this, it is .015 cents per email). When the email database gets large enough that it isn’t economically feasible to pay per email, then the client can either switch to a monthly payment plan on Vertical Response or export the email database list to use a different email campaign service. I prefer the template wizard on Constant Contact to Vertical Response, but the pricing structure makes me stick with Vertical Response for my start-up clients.

It is important to use a reputable email campaign company who adheres to the anti-spam legislation and follows guidelines to maintain status on the “white lists”. Vertical Response reviews every email to make sure it is following proper protocol.

I don’t have any affiliations with Vertical Response other than the fact that I am a regular user of this service. I often integrate an email sign up form in websites so clients can build an email database via their website.

Why Twitter is Helpful

Most of my clients agree that it is completely necessary to have a Facebook business page along with their website presence. Many request that Facebook be integrated into their website via a Like Box as exampled on my homepage.

Additionally, I recommend that small businesses employ a Twitter account. A Twitter account can be an efficient tool to retweet articles that are helpful to a loyal following. I have developed brand loyalty to those web developers who tweet and retweet information that progresses my professional development. I look forward to their tweets because they are valuable to me. At this time, most social media integrations don’t allow users to easily send an article link to a Facebook business page, only to the personal profile. Therefore, I retweet to my professional Twitter account instead.
